“Perverse / Metamorphic Urbanism” International Symposium

Contemporary Tokyo has become a “theme park of diversity,” where diverse cultures are packaged as consumable symbols. In order to maintain a clean and smart urban infrastructure, claims of historical roots and the “other” that cause friction—street demonstrations, homelessness, street prostitution, nudity, shit jobs, loitering, smoking, picking up girls, graffiti, happenings, inconvenient history—are eliminated as noise and washed away from memory.
As symbolized by the hate speech incident in Shin-Okubo’s Koreatown and the conflict with the Kurdish community that has become apparent in Kawaguchi City, in a theme park of diversity, acts of exposing identities such as religion, ethnicity, race, gender, and sexuality in public places—that is, political performances—which go beyond personal hobbies, will also be considered “nuisance behaviour” that threatens psychological safety, and will be silenced through “shaming” on social media or reporting to the police.
Is there still room for a “metamorphosis” to disrupt the suffocating cycle of this city? This symposium will mirror the practices of TPAC, a Toronto-based performance art collective that serves as a pioneering model of multicultural coexistence, against the “diversity” of Tokyo, exploring the possibility that the “site responsiveness” of performance can coincidentally resonate with “the other,” including the trauma of the place and even inhuman actors, and trigger a frictional transformation of the city, which we will call “metamorphosis urbanism.”

現代の東京は、多様な文化が消費可能な記号としてパッケージ化された「多様性のテーマパーク」と化しています。そこでは、クリーンでスマートな都市インフラを維持するため、歴史的なルーツの主張や、摩擦を引き起こす〈他なるもの〉——街頭デモ、ホームレス、路上売春、ヌード、シットジョブ、たむろ、喫煙、ナンパ、グラフィティ、ハプニング、不都合な歴史——は、ノイズとして排除され、記憶から洗浄されていきます。
新大久保のコリアンタウンで起きたヘイトスピーチ、川口市で顕在化しているクルド人コミュニティとの軋轢などが象徴するように、多様性のテーマパークでは私的な趣味を超えた宗教、民族、人種、ジェンダー、セクシュアリティ等のアイデンティティを公共の場で露出する行為＝政治的パフォーマンスもまた、心理的な安全を脅かす「迷惑行為」とみなされ、SNSへの「晒し」や警察への通報で沈黙させられることになるでしょう。
この窒息しそうな都市の循環をかき乱す〈変態〉（Metamorphose）の余地は残されているのでしょうか。本シンポジウムでは多文化共生の先駆的モデルであるトロントのパフォーマンスアートコレクティブ・TPACによる実践と東京の「多様性」を鏡合わせに突き合わせ、パフォーマンスの「サイト・レスポンシビリティ（現場応答性）」が、場所のトラウマや非人間的なアクターまでも含めた〈他なるもの〉と偶発的に共振し、摩擦をともなう都市の変態を引き起こす可能性を「変態アーバニズム」として模索します。
