KNOTT, James

James Knott is a Toronto-based artist and member of the Toronto Performance Art Collective. Their practice spans performance, music, and moving images, employing tactics of self-mythologizing as a means to bridge personal narratives into communal ones. Lately their work has oscillated between more gesturally based performance actions to highly ornate and layered video compositions and music to explore themes of queer and trans identity, and how archetypes of femininity and masculinity can interrogate the politics of desire. An alumnus of The Roundtable Residency and the Buddies in Bad Times Emerging Creators Unit, they’ve exhibited/performed at Xpace Cultural Centre, Trinity Square Video, the Toornto Feminist Art Conference, FADO Performance Art Centre, the 7a*11d International Festival of Performance Art, Montreal’s Festival Phénomena, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.

ジェームズ・ノットはトロントを拠点とするアーティストであり、7a*11dトロント・パフォーマンス・アート・コレクティブのメンバー。パフォーマンス、音楽、映像など多岐にわたる活動を展開し、自己神話化の手法を用いて個人的な物語を共同体の物語へと繋げる。近年、その人の作品は、ジェスチャーを重視したパフォーマンスから、精緻で重層的な映像作品や音楽まで、幅広い表現方法を駆使し、クィアやトランスジェンダーのアイデンティティ、そして女性らしさや男性らしさの原型が欲望の政治性をどのように問い直すことができるのかといったテーマを探求している。 「ザ・ラウンドテーブル・レジデンシー」と「バディーズ・イン・バッド・タイムズ」新進クリエイターユニットの卒業生であるその人は、Xpace Cultural Centre、Trinity Square Video、トロント・フェミニスト・アート・カンファレンス、FADOパフォーマンス・アート・センター、7a*11d国際パフォーマンス・アート・フェスティバル、モントリオールのフェスティバルであるフェノメナ、ハミルトン美術館、オンタリオ美術館などで展示やパフォーマンスを行ってきた。

James Knott presents…”The Apocalypse In Your Bedroom” Tour
Thursday October 4 7:30 pm

This award-winning facade of a rock show utilizes layers of projection, audio, gestural choreography, and stage props to coalesce into a black-box style theatrical spectacle exploring the elusive and dichotomous nature of queer identity. Through reinterpreted personal histories that are poetically reimagined, the show unveils an underlying narrative of struggle with mental health, identity, and societal acceptance. The degradation of the ‘self’ unfolds in front of the viewer as the spectacle elements of the theatrical fantasy chip away to reveal a deteriorating reality.

James Knott is an emerging Toronto-based artist and writer who recently graduated from OCAD University. Their practice combines video, animation, performance, audio art, and theatre to create immersive experiences for the viewer. Common themes and motifs include paradoxical and queer identity, inner dialogue, mental illness, and camp theatrics.
