Join us for a live virtual tour of the Yahndawa’ exhibition reception at Meduse in Québec, hosted by this year’s 7a*11d éminence grise, Alain-Martin Richard. He will provide a bilingual tour of the show, providing background on the multiyear project and interviewing some of the invited artists.
Exhibition opens September 9 and continues through October 16 at VU, L’Œil de poisson, and La Bande Vidéo, 580 and 620 Côte d’Abraham.

This project is an alliance between the Wendat collective and VU to cultivate relationships between the non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal artistic communities in the Nionwentsïo, Wendat territory.
Yahndawa’ is ahaha’, an ancient waterway which the earth, ya’ta’, wears on her back. It carried the sky, yaronhia’, on its shoulders long before it took us into its arms.

Änen’enh; we are its children. As it teaches us, the stories and dreams that we carry are renewed in our relationships, commensurate with what we give and what we receive.
Kwaweyih. Our words, onywawenda’, are also promises. Our actions mark the ecosystems. One day, we shore up the riverbanks; the next, we let the waters and life reclaim their natural course. Time and time again, we portage and we are transported, we interconnect and we shape our landscapes. Onyiondih. Yithïa’ch.
Yahndawa’ is an exchange among seven artists from Wendake and seven artists from Quebec City who have been asked to discuss their practices, collaborate, and co-create with the support of seven artists’ organizations. Since 2020, an artistic committee comprising members of the Wendat community and VU have met regularly to develop and nurture an exchange project with the aim of forging bonds between our two communities.
Following the river (yahndawa’—known as the Akiawenrahk/Saint-Charles) that joins our two communities and embracing the notion of portaging, we each entered the project with our own baggage which we then unpacked in new lands, all the while supporting each other in our shared adventures. Yahndawa’ is an exchange of artistic practices, but more broadly, it also allows us to consider our concepts, ways of doing things, visions, realities, and identities.

Ce projet est une alliance entre le collectif wendat et VU pour cultiver des relations entre les communautés artistiques allochtones et autochtones de la région de Québec située en Nionwentsïo, territoire wendat.
Yahndawa’ est ahaha’, une voie d’eau ancienne que la terre, ya’ta’, porte sur son dos. Ses flots ont transporté le ciel, yaronhia’, sur ses épaules bien avant de nous accueillir dans ses bras.
Änen’enh; nous sommes ses enfants. Comme elle nous l’enseigne, les histoires et les rêves que nous portons se renouvellent au fil de nos relations, à la mesure de ce que l’on reçoit et de ce que l’on donne.
Kwaweyih. Nos paroles, onywawenda’, sont aussi des promesses. Nos gestes marquent les écosystèmes; un jour, on bétonne les berges, un autre, on les libère pour que la vie reprenne ses droits. Tour à tour, nous portageons et nous faisons porter, nous nous relions entre nous et façonnons nos paysages. Onyiondih. Yithïa’ch.

Yahndawa’ est un échange entre sept artistes de Wendake et sept de Québec, qui ont été appelé·e·s à discuter de leurs pratiques, mais aussi à collaborer et à cocréer, avec le soutien de sept organismes artistiques. Depuis 2020, un comité artistique formé de membres du collectif wendat et de VU se réunit régulièrement pour élaborer et faire évoluer ce projet d’échange visant à créer des liens entre nos deux communautés.
Suivant la rivière (yahndawa’) qui relie nos deux communautés – dénommée Akiawenrahk/la Saint-Charles –, ainsi que l’idée de portages, chacun·e est arrivé·e dans ce projet avec son bagage, qui est ensuite amené sur de nouveaux territoires, avec la complicité des un·e·s et des autres. Yahndawa’ est un échange à propos des pratiques artistiques, mais permet aussi plus largement de se pencher sur nos conceptions, nos façons de faire, nos visions, nos réalités, nos identités.
