Headbands & Bracelets

Headbands and Bracelets is a durational performance where Heidi Nagtegaal knits and crochets headbands and bracelets (HBAB) for people in their communities. Nagtegaal Headbanded constantly at art events, BBQs, music shows, and family events from 2003 to 2010, offering them for everyone in a certain situation, leaving no one out. After they Headbanded FUSE at the VAG, they took a 13 year break. In 2023, Nagtegaal started making Headbands again, and is now Headbanding art festivals, and public events. To date, approximately 15,000 people have been Headbanded or Braceleted.

Heidi Nagtegaal is a textile artist who focuses on the human body, mental health, community care, and inclusion in their practice. HBAB is the most blunt project in their roster. They have exhibited internationally, graduating with a BFA from Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design in 2005, and an MFA The School of the Free Hammock, Hammock Residency. Heidi also is the Founder and Executive Director of Hammock Residency, 2006 – present.
